THERE was disappointment for Corinthian Boys in Wayside Celtic FC on Saturday last, when Mipo Odubeko’s two-goal salvo ensured that the Douglas side were on the receiving end of a 2-0 reversal to St Joseph’s Boys in the U13 SFAI Cup showpiece.

Speaking after the game, Corinthians manager Mark Redmond was understandably disappointed with the eventual outcome of the game, but was nevertheless delighted with the application of his team.

“Yeah, disappointing in the end I suppose. The first half we gave away goals at crucial times. The goal before half-time was a bit of a body blow when it arrived,” Redmond remarked.

“The second half, they [Corinthians] were outstanding. Better team the second half, but look that’s sport and we’ll move on.

“I’m the proudest coach in Ireland. They couldn’t have done any more. They worked their socks off, never let their heads go down. Kept going, and as a manager that’s all you can ask for.”

“Completely [going to plan] and we knew their whole team was based around dead-balls – corners and free-kicks. We just didn’t defend one corner, and we got caught. Then another sloppy goal, which wasn’t defended well.”

In spite of this result, though, it has been a very productive season for the Corinthians Boys U13 outfit. They enjoyed local cup success in Turner’s Cross last week, and are well in contention for domestic league honours.

Redmond praised his squad for their excellent achievements to date, and also expressed his hope that they will use Saturday’s loss as a motivational factor next term.

“It’s great progress. We’re fighting on three fronts. We won the cup last Tuesday night in Turner’s Cross. We now have five games in the league to win, so the lads have been spectacularly good.

“Look, they’ve lost two games all season.

“I just said to the lads, ‘let’s turn this negative energy into positive energy. Use it as a motivation for next year, and use it as a motivation to try and get the league sorted out.’ We’ll come back bigger and stronger next year,” Redmond added.
