Replacement Conall Doherty was the hero at the Belfield Bowl last night, when his dramatic seven-point salvo helped UCD to overcome Dublin University in the 63rd Annual Colours Match.
In a frantic opening, the hosts developed a 10-0 lead by the eighth-minute – courtesy of a penalty from outhalf Liam Bourke and a converted try from centre Stephen Murphy.
Trinity’s challenge eventually came to life, when scrumhalf Angus Lloyd’s touch down in the corner was converted by Tommy Whittle, but following swapped place-kicks between Bourke and Whittle, UCD’s Bobby Holland broke free for a well-taken score under the posts on 33 minutes.
However, a subsequent Maupin five-pointer reduced Trinity’s deficit to five (20-15) by the interval. And they opened up a nine-point buffer thanks to Tom Ryan and Maupin tries in the 61st and 63rd minutes respectively.
UCD weren’t ready to relinquish their crown without a fight, however, and after James Tracy’s five-pointer set-up a nerve-wracking finale, a magnificent move led to Doherty’s 78th minute try.
