Dominic’s secure crown as Loreto and Mac Dara’s come up short

IT was a day to savour for St Dominic’s College in Nenagh on Saturday, when the Cabra girls were crowned All-Ireland Schools’ Senior ‘C’ Camogie champions following a gritty 2-6 to 1-6 victory over Sacred Heart, Clonakilty.

A 0-4 salvo from free-taker Rebecca McCarthy ensured that the Rebelettes led by three points (0-5 to 0-2) moving into the second half, but with Ciara Glynn twice finding the opposition net, either side of a Claire Sexton three-pointer forSacred Heart, it was the jubilant Dominic’s who secured the national title.

Unfortunately, Loreto Beaufort, Rathfarnham didn’t have the same luck in the ‘D’ decider at the Tipperary venue, as they were on the receiving end of a heartbreaking two-point reversal (1-9 to 1-7) against Coláiste na Phiarsaigh, Glanmire. A 1-1 Aisling O’Leary contribution – in addition to her sister Eimear’s four-point salvo – had Loreto firing on all cylinders during the first period of play, but despite featuring a player-of-the-match display from Sarah Nagle, the south Dublin school were denied by a late Glanmire rally.

There was also disappointment for St Mac Dara’s CC in the Junior ‘D’ showpiece in Ballykelly, where Mercy Convent, Waterford recorded a 2-8 to 1-3 triumph. With Ellen Keyes scoring an early goal, the Templeogue school only trailed their Déise opponents by a point at the break, but despite the best efforts of Ciara O’Riordan, Niamh Gannon and goalkeeper Hannah Begley, Mercy Convent finished with eight points to spare.
