Luke McDermott and David Hawkshaw were the try-scoring heroes in Donnybrook yesterday, as Belvedere College booked their place in the Leinster Schools’ Junior Cup semi-final with victory over St Michael’s College.
This was the second game in succession Belvo held their opponents scoreless, and they are now just one game away from reaching their third consecutive final.
The adverse weather conditions made life difficult for both sets of players, but in the latter stages of the opening period, McDermott crossed over on the left-flank following a sweeping move across the Michael’s line. This provided the north Dublin school with a 5-0 interval lead, but when the action re-started, Michael’s were doing their best to force Belvo on the back-foot.
Superb defensive play from the 17-time champions kept Michael’s at bay, however, and after claiming the ball at the breakdown on 49 minutes, Belvedere’s Hawkshaw drove over powerfully for the decisive score.
