Eoin and South come up short in Leinster
GAELIC GAMES: LEINSTER SH ‘A’ ROUND-UP
By Daire Walsh
THERE was disappointment for Dublin South and Colaiste Eoin in the quarter-finals of the Leinster Schools SH ‘A’ Championship last Saturday, as both teams were on the receiving end of away defeats.
With Colm Hayes and Tom Fox in fine scoring form, South led Good Counsel, New Ross by four points (0-6 to 0-2) 13 minutes into their contest in Carlow.
Templeogue College’s Chris Bennett also made a valuable contribution, but following a brace of Bob Whitty goals, Good Counsel were on level terms (2-4 to 0-10) at the interval.
It was always going to be a tough task for South against the elements after the resumption, and despite the best efforts of midfield pairing Fox and Paul Rigney, Good Counsel (who included All-Ireland minor winner Darragh Joyce in their side) sealed a hard-earned 2-12 to 0-12 success.
Colaiste Eoin also came up short on their travels, as three points (0-12 to 0-9) separated them and Borris Vocational School at Abbeyleix.
With Michéal Ó Cróinin and Feargal de Fuitleigh registering a combined total of 0-5, the gaelscoil held a three-point buffer 18 minutes in, but four points from the inspirational Kevin McDonald helped Borris to level matters in time for the interval.
Indeed, the Carlow boys increased their lead to four (0-10 to 0-6) in a dominant third-quarter, and although Colaiste Eoin battled admirably throughout, Borris ultimately held out for their first-ever win at this grade.
