A strong first-half showing provided the platform at Donnybrook yesterday, when Belvedere College advanced to the next stage of the Leinster Junior Cup with a comfortable first-round victory over St Gerard’s, Bray.

Belvo opened the scoring after 10 minutes thanks to a fine finish over the line by out-half John Meagher.

Full-back David Lacey subsequently converted, and he also supplied the bonuses to captain Harry Beggy’s majestic five-pointer, his try ensuring that the Great Denmark Street school held a 14-0 interval cushion leaving St Gerard’s, Bray with a lot to do.

Their Wicklow counterparts did offer admirable resistance upon the resumption, but owing to a brace of Lacey penalties, Belvedere booked their place in the last eight.
