Mulry late show sinks Salesian

ATHLONE CC 1-7
SALESIAN, CELBRIDGE 0-9

Saturday January 14 2012

Conor Mulry fired a goal deep into stoppage-time to give Athlone Community College a dramatic victory at Celbridge yesterday.

Athlone had made a promising start, and took the lead through David Brookes, but Craig Mooney replied for Salesians.

Ruairdhi McManus and Senan Farrell pointed for Athlone, only for impressive midfielder Paddy Brophy to respond with a brace.

Scores from Eoin Fallon and Ronan Donohoe gave Athlone a 0-5 to 0-3 midway advantage.

Salesians, though, made by far the better start after the break, with quick-fire points from Ronan Byrne, Brophy (free), Shane Ryan and Mooney putting them ahead.

Half-back Dermot Donnelly and Donohoe brought the visitors level, but Salesians regained the lead with Mooney’s third point on 55 minutes.

Athlone substitute Martin Flannery crashed a shot against the woodwork with two minutes remaining, and another point from the excellent Byrne on the stroke of 60 minutes looked to have sealed it for Salesian.

But Mulry had other ideas, firing low past Sean Holmes, following a lung-bursting run up the middle by Brookes, to take his side into the second round.
