Brilliant Dominican’s fall just short in Nenagh against Glanmire girls

here was heartbreak for Dominican College at McDonagh Park, Nenagh last Saturday afternoon, as the Griffith Avenue school were narrowly defeated by Glanmire Community College in the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Post-Primary Schools ‘D’ decider.

It had been an unforgettable voyage towards the national stage for the north Dublin girls, who had defeated Taylor’s Hill and Loreto College, Mullingar en route to the March 8 showdown.

Although they produced another stellar display in Tipperary, the unerring accuracy of Douglas’ Sarah Fahy ultimately gave the Rebelettes an upper hand.

In a similar vein to their previous encounters, centre-forward Mary Cronin (the star performer in their penultimate-round clash) and Niamh Rock were key figures for Dominican’s.

Indeed, midfielder Rock – a very reliable free-taker throughout the current campaign – contributed four points from dead-ball situations during the opening period, but despite the best efforts of Clodagh Ellis and Niamh Gleeson in defence, the metropolitans were staring into a four-point deficit (0-9 to 0-5) at the mid-way point.

Player of the match Fahy, who amassed a grand total of 1-10 in their provincial final triumph over Rathkeale, was proving to be the scorer-in-chief once again for Glanmire.

UNASSAILABLE

With half-forward Sarah Curran also finding the target, they held a seemingly unassailable 0-11 to 0-5 lead with just 10 minutes remaining.

Dominican resilience was commendable during the closing stages, though, and following well-worked scores by Eimear Witter, Nadine Murphy, Cronin and Rock (three), they were firmly back in contention.

And while they came up just short in the end, but they can nevertheless look back on their adventures in 2013/14 with a large degree of satisfaction.
