A combined tally of 2-3 from substitutes Jake Maloney and James Doran proved to be the difference last Friday afternoon, as St Aidan’s eventually overcame the spirited challenge of Coláiste Eoin after extra-time in an event-filled Dublin Schools Juvenile A Football semi-final.

Playing on their home pitch, the Collins Avenue boys raced into a four-point lead with just eight minutes gone on the clock after Andy McCaul, half-forward Gavin Kilkenny (two) and Jordan Leonard registered scores from play.

Eoin had been rather wasteful with the possession during the early exchanges and the north Dublin outfit subsequently capitalised, as further scores from Leonard (two), Eoin Flaherty, Kilkenny and midfielder Enda O’Donnell gave them a comfortable 0-9 to 0-0 platform heading into the second period.

Eoin were going to force their way back into the reckoning, but they were a much-improved team upon the resumption and thanks to three quick-fire points courtesy of nominal centre-back Michael Mac Eoin and full-forward Conchuir ó Cinnsealaigh (two), they had eaten into the Aidan’s advantage.

Outstanding

Aidan’s did deliver a hammer blow when Leonard shot past Cormac ó Braonáin at the second time of asking.

But when ó Cinnsealaigh followed up Mac Eoin and Peadar Cofaigh-Byrne points with an outstanding goal at the end of the third quarter, they had managed to reduce their deficit to four points. Leonard alleviated the pressure on Aidan’s with a 47th-minute pointed free, but points from substitute Conor ó Catháin and ó Cinnsealaigh meant that just a goal separated the teams with eight minutes left on the clock.

Just when it looked like were Aidan’s were ready to progress, Mac Eoin was on hand to raise the green flag four minutes into stoppage time after ó Catháin had opted to take a short free. As a result, an additional 20 minutes were required.

However, having received a fright in the previous 30 minutes, Aidan’s were rejuvenated in extra-time, as early points from Leonard and McCaul were swiftly added to by a major from replacement Maloney.

Further scores arrived for Aidan’s from the equally effective Doran (two) and the excellent Leonard, and although Eoin finally added to their total with a close-range free by ó Catháin, Maloney struck his second goal to give Aidan’s an incredible 10-point advantage (3-15 to 2-8).

A second dramatic comeback was a bridge too far for Eoin, and despite adding another placed ball effort from ó Catháin, a clinical McCaul three-pointer helped Aidan’s to ease over the finishing line.

Meanwhile, at Páirc Naomh Uinsionn yesterday, Ardscoil Rís booked their place in the with a hard-earned 5-15 to 3-12 success over St Fintan’s HS.
