THERE was heartbreak for Dublin South at Mount Leinster Rangers GAA Club yesterday afternoon, as three injury-time pointed frees for Borris Vocational School meant that Martin McKenna’s charges were on the receiving end of a narrow defeat in the opening game of their senior hurling league campaign.

With a number of their squad currently involved in the minor football and minor hurling championships with their respective clubs, Dublin South were somewhat depleted for this encounter. They also had to deal with horrendous weather conditions at the county Carlow venue.

Scores were also at a premium for much of the contest, but thanks to a goal from the impressive Gary Quinlivan, South did hold a slender 1-3 to 1-2 cushion heading into the second half.

With wind advantage on the side of the hosts after the restart, a massive effort was required from the Metropolitans if they were achieve a positive result, but with Round Towers Clondalkin star Quinlivan bringing his tally to 1-3, and the likes of Donal Lane (two) and Gareth Crowley raising white flags, they found themselves on level terms on the stroke of 60 minutes.

Borris’ strong finish did ultimately yield the points on offer, but although the southsiders can remain positive after this showing for their remaining fixtures in the competition.
