Leinster assistant coach Robin McBryde is convinced that Andrew Goodman has all the necessary tools to be a major success on the international stage with Ireland.

With Mike Catt set to depart in the wake of next year’s summer tour in South Africa, Andy Farrell was on the lookout for a new attack specialist within his Ireland coaching set-up. Although he only joined Leinster in advance of the 2022/23 season, it was announced last week that Goodman is to fill the void that will be left by the former England international in 2024.

Having worked alongside him for the bulk of the past 18 months, McBryde – who spent 12 years of his own career as part of Warren Gatland’s coaching ticket in Wales – is of the opinion that the New Zealander’s loss will be keenly felt in Leinster from next season onwards.

“He’ll be a big loss to us here. He’s bedded himself in very well, has a lot of knowledge and experience. He only recently returned from that World Cup experience with Samoa and everyone has enjoyed working with Andrew and everyone has seen the qualities that Ireland are obviously going to benefit from,” McBryde said of Goodman.

“Having been at Leinster as a player himself, sometimes it can be harder to build those relationships back up now that those dynamics have changed, but I think he did that brilliantly and he’s been great to work alongside. I’ve learned a lot just working alongside Goody and there’s quite a bit of the season left.

“You can’t turn an opportunity like that down, really, to coach at international level with one of the best teams in world rugby. I wish him all the best and hopefully we can squeeze a bit more out of him this season before it’s all over.”

Interestingly, Stuart Lancaster’s departure to Top 14 outfit Racing 92 has seen Goodman taking on greater responsibility when it comes to Leinster’s attack in the current campaign, but McBryde believes his Kiwi compatriot has taken it all in his stride.

“Some of the players were saying how we could improve moving forward and they’ve been listened to. Both Goody and Leo have actioned those points and the weeks are looking a bit different,” McBryde added.

“ The sessions themselves are a little bit different and as a result everyone feels things are a little bit fresher and a little bit more enjoyable as well.

“It has worked well and with the added responsibility he hasn’t changed, just taken it in his stride and it’s been great.”
