Crowley treble sparks ‘Nure success

TERENURE COLLEGE 4-8, MAYNOOTH PP 0-4 – CIARAN CROWLEY was the hero for Terenure College last Thursday as his hat-trick of goals helped the south Dublin school seal the Dublin Schools Juvenile Hurling ‘C’ title at the expense of an overwhelmed Maynooth Post Primary.
Terenure had to show plenty of character during the opening half, as they aimed to negotiate a very strong breeze (which favoured their north Kildare counterparts).
But with half-backs Neil Feery (who doubled up as ‘Nure’s centre-back and captain) and Mark Eaton providing plenty of leadership, they held a 1-4 to 0-3 lead at the break thanks to some fine scores from John Murphy, and a well-taken goal by Crowley just two minutes into the action.
With the wind at their backs upon the resumption, Terenure were certainly in an excellent position to push on for the victory they craved, but there was every chance that Maynooth could perform more effectively against the elements.
It is to Terenure’s credit that they never allowed this to happen, though, and when Crowley found the back of the Moyglare Road outfit’s net for a second time in the early moments after the restart, it was clear that there was only going to be one winner of this contest.
Remainder
Maynooth battled gamely for the remainder of the half, but with Murphy continuing to find his range, and Luke McDwyer and David Croke also making valuable contributions, Terenure were always able to a keep distance between them and their opponents.
Jake Moore was on hand to supply his side’s next goal of the day, and with Crowley capping a magnificent individual performance with his third of the showpiece, Terenure comfortably secured a well-deserved success.
