Chilliain crowned
O Dhuibh and O Cuinn double up as Colaiste blast past brave Paul’s

COLAISTE CHILLIAIN 7-3, ST PAUL’S CBS 0-3 – TWO goals each from Riain O Dhuibh and Adam O Cuinn paved the way for Coláiste Chilliain’s victory at Tom Russell Park on Tuesday, as the Nangor Road school were crowned Tom Quinlan Shield champions.
Though the final outcome might suggest otherwise, the early stages were quite even.
But after Chilliain fell short with a number of efforts on goal (centre-forward Evan Smithers smashed a powerful shot off the underside of the crossbar), Paul’s took the lead with 10 minutes on the clock, as Alan McKenna palmed over from close-range following a delivery from the right wing by Daniel McKenna.
Paul’s extended their lead seven minutes later with a second score from the lively Godfrey Yoro, as Chilliain struggled to settle into proceedings in the manner they would have wished.
However, a terrific individual major by Adam ó Cuinn on the 20-minute mark proved a confidence-booster for Chilliain, and the elusive No 13 was on hand to increase his side’s cushion to four when he grabbed his second goal from the subsequent attack with a flicked finish over the head of Paul’s netminder Cillian Foley.
Cian ó Cuileannáin also contributed a fine point from play, and thanks to a smart finish from close range 24 minutes in by Ben ó Cuinn (his partner in the full-forward line, Adam ó Cuinn, providing the assist), Chilliain brought a 3-1 to 0-2 lead into the second period.
It was anticipated that Chilliain would continue to push on upon the resumption, but they didn’t always make their dominance count, kicking eight second-half wides before finally adding to their tally with a 21-metre free from Smithers 10 minutes after the restart.
In fact, Chilliain ended the game with 18 wides to their name, but were clinical in front of the posts when it truly mattered, as further goals from Oran ó Sheallbhaigh and ó Dhuibh gave them an insurmountable 15-point advantage moving into the final quarter.
Paul’s did their best to keep their Dublin 22 counterparts at bay during this juncture, but it was always likely that more goals would arrive before the game’s end.
Indeed, Chilliain’s sixth arrived with 11 minutes remaining courtesy of the influential Michéal ó Raghallaigh from a tight right-hand angle, before their seventh and final three-pointer from a speculative ó Dhuibh shot completed their tally.
Paul’s battled until the end, Sergio Ciacan finally opening their second-half account with a 57th-minute point from the right-hand side, but it was little more than a consolation as Chilliain eased over the line.
