Rose Of Tralee Betting: New York Rose Set For A Big 12 Months
While the dust hasn’t quite settled on her victory at the Kerry Sports Academy in the Munster Technological University on Tuesday evening, New York’s Roisin Wiley can look forward to a big 12 months as the defending champion of the Rose of Tralee.
Her 2023 triumph seemed somewhat unlikely before the start of the festival last Friday, when some betting sites saw her as only a 12/1 prospect to be named this year’s Rose.
Currently living in Manhattan, Wiley grew up in Westchester in the State of New York to Irish parents from Limerick – her father Eddie is a Kilmallock man, while her mother Majella is originally from Templeglantine.
She is a Vice-President of national sales at a consumer marketing company, managing a territory of over-the-counter and pharmaceutical accounts.
In addition to Wiley winning the Rose of Tralee title, she will – like a number of the winners who have gone before her – be the recipient of a number of prizes.
For starters, she will be gifted a Kia Niro plug-in hybrid that she can drive during her year as Rose of Tralee.
She will also receive complimentary accommodation at The Meadowlands Hotel every time she returns to Tralee in the next 12 months and she will be able to travel the world as part of a prize fund that is valued at an astounding €25,000.
Wiley Moved From Outsider To Favourite In Short Space Of Time
After being 12/1 before the event got underway, she subsequently moved into 2/1 with specials betting sites at the end of the first live television broadcast of the Festival on Monday and ultimately justified her favourites’ tag in the end.
By winning the Rose of Tralee, she becomes the first representative from New York to emerge victorious since Lisa Murtagh in 2007.
Interestingly, her mother was also a native of Limerick (Athea to be exact) though her father was a Longford man.
Wiley’s namesake Roisin Egenton was another New York winner from 2000 with Maggie Flaherty (1974) and Marie Soden (1976) also winning it for the Big Apple in the past.
Another Overseas Winner Could Be On The Cards In 2024
The chances of another New York Rose winning next year might be a tall order, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented.
Charmaine Kenny and Clare Kambamettu were back-to-back winners for London in 2009 and 2010, whilst Haley O’Sullivan (Texas) and current MEP Maria Walsh (Philadelphia) were consecutive US-based champions in 2013 and 2014.
Wiley is the 35th overseas representative to win the Rose of Tralee and this is something worth keeping in mind when the odds are formed with betting apps for next year’s festival.
