St Jude’s appoint Carty as their new senior hurling manager

THE TEMPLEOGUE-based St Jude’s GAA club have announced Gerry Carty as their new senior hurling manager for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
A club stalwart who was more recently involved with the Jude’s senior men’s footballers as a selector – helping them to reach the Dublin Senior One Football Championship decider in 2021 – Carty assumes the role from John McCarthy. Speaking to the club’s social media channels, Carty was thrilled to be taking on the job from next year onwards.
“It’s a great honour to be asked to manage the St Jude’s senior hurlers. This is a great opportunity for the management team and an exciting challenge which we are all looking forward to,” Carty said.
Similarly, St Jude’s Adult Games Chairman Mick Nerney was thrilled to have Carty on board for such an important role.
“We are excited to announce Gerry as the senior hurling manager. He played a key role with our senior footballers for over seven years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.”
The main objective for Carty and his management team heading into 2023 will be to secure a swift return to the Dublin Senior One Hurling Championship. Following consecutive reversals to eventual finalists Na Fianna, local rivals Ballyboden St Enda’s, St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh and Cuala in Group One of the top-tier competition, the southsiders found themselves in a relegation play-off against St Brigid’s at O’Toole Park on September 25.
Despite producing a strong effort on the day, Jude’s suffered an agonising 1-18 to 1-17 reversal at the hands of their Blanchardstown/Castleknock counterparts. This essentially saw them trading places with Faughs – with whom they share a home base at Tymon Park – after the latter advanced to the final stages of the Dublin Senior Two Hurling Championship.
While it was a disappointing season overall for Jude’s, there is no doubt that the raw materials are there for them to enjoy a productive 2023.
Before their championship campaign had gotten underway, they had achieved success on the league front. Finishing second to Oliver Plunkett’s in the Adult Hurling League Division Two table, Jude’s were placed into a promotion play-off against the Ballyboden St Enda’s ‘B’ team.
Thanks to an accomplished 0-22 to 0-10 victory against Boden at Tymon Park on July 9, Jude’s earned a spot in the Adult Hurling League top-flight for the forthcoming season. This will allow them to rub shoulders with the very best club sides in the capital and will undoubtedly aid them in their championship campaign.
Danny Sutcliffe remains a pivotal figure for Jude’s – he also lined out for the club’s senior footballers this year – with the 2013 All Star having captained the Dublin hurlers as recently as 2021.
The McManus brothers Joe and Ger (who featured for the Mayo hurlers in 2022) are also expected to have crucial roles to play for Jude’s in the new year, while Dublin underage hurler Kevin Lahiff is another player to watch out for.
