Maher inspires Vincent’s in their five-star showing
A first-half goal blitz helped an impressive St Vincent’s to secure an emphatic 5-11 to 1-11 triumph over Kilkenny’s Thomastown in a Leinster Senior Club Camogie Championship semi-final at Pairc Naomh Uinsionn yesterday.
After Dublin senior footballer Niamh Hetherton had opened the scoring with a fine point, Alison Maguire shook the net with just four minutes gone on the clock.
Although Thomastown responded with five points on the trot, additional green flag efforts from Aisling Maher, Muireann Kelleher and Hetherton left Vincent’s 4-5 to 0-6 in front at the break.
This left Thomastown in a perilous position on the resumption, but Eva Hynes’ superb three-pointer off a 52nd minute free did offer them a glimmer of hope.
Their Dublin counterparts were much too strong, however, and a second goal courtesy of Maher – who finished with an outstanding tally of 2-9 – ensured Vincent’s sealed a provincial final spot in confident style.
