A happy top Drog

KEVIN DOHERTY was an extremely happy man at Dalymount Park on Friday as his Drogheda United side secured their Premier Division status for 2023 with a dramatic 1-0 win.
After Jordan Flores’ red card, sub Dayle Rooney sank ten-man Bohemians in the 93rd minute to send the Drogs 15 points clear of both Finn Harps and UCD with four games left.
And Doherty believes his squad have defied expectations in staving off the threat of relegation, saying:
“The biggest feeling I have is pride in the lads. When I took this job people told me I was mad. We’d lost five of our back six, our top scorer. We were certs for going down.
“But four games left and we’re safe, 15 points ahead of the two teams behind us. I think I made the right choice.
“I’m not joking. If we had stayed up on the last day of the season with an OG in the 95th minute, I’d have taken it.
“UCD are a different model, but apart from them we’ve the lowest budget in the league.”
