SHAY MCELLIGOTT bagged a personal tally of 1-3 at Abbotstown as New York booked their place in tomorrow’s All-Ireland Junior Football Championship final.

In a tentative opening to the contest, Warwickshire suffered a temporary set-back when full-forward Conal Dowling was sent to the sin-bin. While New York took the lead through a Tiernan Mathers point in his absence, Michael McGettrick levelled matters on his return.

The men from the Big Apple exploded into life towards the end of the opening period with points by Brian Coughlan and Peter Cronin, before McElligott chipped the stranded James Connolly for a 29th-minute goal.

Warwickshire’s Niall Gilbride and opposition netminder Brendan Cole (’45’) subsequently traded scores to leave New York 1-5 to 0-2 in front at the interval.

Frees from McGettrick and goalkeeper Connolly kept Warwickshire in contention inside the final-quarter, but with scores from McElligott and Kevin Loane at the opposite end, New York progressed to tomorrow’s showpiece at Croke Park.
