First-half tries from Barry Daly and Andy Boyle were crucial at the Belfield Bowl last night, as UCD emerged triumphant from the 61st annual Colours Match, whilst simultaneously leap-frogging Dublin University into second place in the Ulster Bank League Division 1B.

A terrific individual try by winger Daly, converted by out-half James Thornton, had drawn the sides level on 21 minutes, ten minutes after centre Ciaran Wade had given Trinity the lead with the help of a bonus kick by David Joyce.

The hosts enjoyed the better finish to the half, however, as full-back Boyle crossed for a converted
score following another break by Daly.

This offered UCD a 14-7 lead heading into the second half, a cushion they held until the 63rd minute, when replacement Cathal Marsh reduced the Trinity deficit with a 30-metre penalty, but with Marsh’s fellow substitute, Niall Earls, also finding the target with a 76th-minute penalty, UCD were able to seal their victory.
