Fitzgibbon Cup Group C: MTU Cork V Trinity College – The Irish Independent – January 28 2022

MTU Cork 1-22 Trinity College 1-16

MTU Cork dug deep at Santry Avenue to see off the challenge of Trinity College and consequently book their place in knockout rounds of the Fitzgibbon Cup with a game to spare.

With the half-forward line of Liam O’Shea, Tomas Howard and Alan Walsh all in fine form, the Leesiders led 0-8 to 0-3 after 17 minutes. Trinity soon responded with a goal from Donal Leavy, but MTU nonetheless brought a 0-14to 1-7 advantage into the interval.

Cork panellist Sean O’Leary-Hayes was lining out in the Trinity colours and his 0-6 salvo was one of the main reasons the Dubliners were just two points adrift (0-18 to 1-13) with seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Donal Leavy also ended the contest with 1-7 to his name and momentum appeared to be with Bryan O’Shaughnessy’s charges in the closing stages.

However, a flicked goal by Walsh opened the floodgates and not only helped to secure a victory for MTU – who will meet GMIT next week to determine the winners of Group C – but also eliminated their opponents from the competition.
