Leinster Schools Camogie Senior ‘A’ League Cup Final: Mount Sackville V St Joseph’s College, Lucan – The Tallaght Echo – January 20 2022

St Joseph’s are pipped in Leinster League decider

By Daire Walsh

THERE was heartbreak for St Joseph’s College, Lucan in the Leinster Schools Camogie Senior ‘A’ League Cup decider at the National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown on Friday afternoon.

Leading by a single point in the closing stages of the contest, Joseph’s conceded a late goal to their opponents Mount Sackville and found themselves chasing the game.

A fourth point from the impressive Sinéad Daly offered them a glimmer of hope, but Mount Sackville did just enough to claim the spoils on a final scoreline of 3-7 to 2-9.

Aside from Daly, Hannah Gibbs and Aoibheann Scott chipped in with 1-1 apiece, while Aoibheann Stokes (0-2) and Sophie McIntyre (0-1) also worked their way onto the scoresheet.

Despite coming up short on the day, Joseph’s manager David Kirwan praised his side for their commendable endeavours.

“Very disappointed for our girls of course, but they put in a serious effort,” he said.

“They gave it everything they had. Can’t fault them at all for their effort. You have to say well done to Mount Sackville on a great win.”

Even though Mount Sackville hit the ground running with an early point, Joseph’s fired back with an unanswered haul of 1-2. In addition to points by Scott (’45’) and Stokes, Gibbs rattled the Mount Sackville net in fine style.

Their Chapelizod counterparts subsequently gained the upper hand, before a Scott goal direct from a free – squeezed in between points by Daly and Gibbs – propelled the Lucan outfit into a 2-4 to 1-6 interval lead.

A second goal on the resumption helped Sackville to regain the initiative, but Joseph’s remained in the driving seat courtesy of contributions from Daly (two), Stokes and McIntyre.

There was to be a final twist, however, and a 54th-minute major proved to be the decisive score from a Mount Sackville perspective.
