DESPITE their 1-0 defeat to DLR Waves in the Women’s National League at the UCD Bowl last Saturday, Cork City manager Paul Farrell is happy with the current level of his side’s performances.

Before recording a recent win over Bohemians at Turner’s Cross, their first of the campaign, the Leesiders made title challengers Shelbourne work for all three points in a June 26 meeting on Dublin’s northside.

Farrell feels City deserved a better reward from this sequence of games, but he is confident results will come on a more consistent basis.

“The last three games we were looking at, Shels, Bohs and DLR. All good opposition and the performances were good for all of them. I know there was only a goal in each game, but some days you can get a draw out of them, some days you can maybe get a 2-0 or 3-0 win. We’ve been unlucky to only get three points out of nine,” Farrell explained.

“I thought we maybe deserved five points. We could have nicked a draw at Shels as well. It was unlucky maybe today again not to get a draw. We’re definitely building. The performances are coming, so the results hopefully will follow.”

Opportunities

While an 88th-minute Ciara Maher goal ultimately swung last weekend’s game towards DLR, City generated a number of opportunities over the course of the contest.

Striker Christina Dring was close to breaking the deadlock in the early exchanges as a strong start presented the visitors with a platform that almost yielded a positive result.

“I thought the girls came out of the blocks. It’s something we’ve been working on, we’ve been slow to get into games. It’s more a mentality that we need to get going early in games and we did today.

“I think the second half we came out sharply, but DLR matched us there as well. DLR are really organised, they’re a really hard team to break down. They’re well-coached. It was a tough game for us, but I thought we put on a good performance.”

Next up for City is a home clash with Athlone Town on Saturday (2pm). Whereas there is no shame in losing out to a DLR side that currently lie fourth in the table, Farrell will be planning on accruing maximum points from their forthcoming showdown with the WNL’s basement outfit.

“Athlone at home, we’re going to plan for that during the week again. We’re taking it game-by-game. Athlone is the next target and we’re looking for the win there as well,” Farrell added.
