Post-Match Reaction: National Hurling League Division 2B – Kildare V Mayo – Paul Divilly – The Leinster Leader – June 15 2021

AFTER MATCH REACTION

By Daire Walsh

Kildare midfielder Paul Divilly said that getting back to the basics was the key to his side’s dramatic turnaround against Mayo in last Saturday’s National Hurling League Division 2B decider at MacHale Park, Castlebar.

“Everyone says it and it’s a boring answer, but it’s going back to what we train to do all the time. It’s the basics, the process, whatever you want to call it. We all know where we’re supposed to be on the pitch. We all know what we’re supposed to do. Some of us just weren’t doing our job in the first half,” Divilly admitted.

“It probably didn’t help the last couple of weeks with the one-sided wins. Lads kind of get into the comfort zone. It definitely wasn’t a one-sided win today. Mayo came to play and it probably took us that bit of time to come to match the pace, because we had it a little bit easier the last few weeks.

“We know we have our work cut out, but again it’s the glimpses in the second half. When we do apply the game plan and we at least equal the work of the opposition, if not outwork them, we’re a good team, we’ve no fear and no worries about Carlow or Westmeath. We’re completely respectful, but we’ll be going in expecting to win.”
