Richie Towell Set For Shamrock Rovers Move: The Tallaght Echo (Online) – May 12 2021

Towell to join forces with champions Shamrock Rovers

By Daire Walsh

Shamrock Rovers have confirmed that former Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell will be joining the club later in the summer.

A native of Inchicore, Towell is set to link-up with the squad over the next few weeks as the Hoops continue their quest for back-to-back SSE Airtricity League Premier Division titles.

Given his deal at English League Two outfit Salford City hasn’t yet expired, he won’t be eligible to represent Rovers until July 1.

When he does become available for selection, Towell will be lining out alongside some familiar faces.

When the Crumlin United youth star joined Salford in the summer of 2019, current Rovers striker Rory Gaffney was still contracted to the Greater Manchester side.

They played together in three games, before Gaffney was sent out on loan to their divisional rivals Walsall.

The Galway man later moved to Rovers in February of last year and now Towell has followed suit.

Up to this point, Dundalk are the only League of Ireland club that Towell has been a part of.

Over the course of his three seasons with the Lilywhites, he shared a dressing room with Sean Gannon and Ronan Finn.

Both players are now part of Stephen Bradley’s set-up at Rovers and will be doing their utmost to make Towell feel at home in Tallaght.

All three men know what it’s like to defend a Premier Division crown, having done so during their time in Dundalk.

With 77 club career goals to his name, Towell will be a major asset for Rovers as they seek to challenge strongly at domestic level and also make a big splash in Europe.

Having won six trophies at Dundalk, Towell went on to achieve overseas success in the form of a League One promotion with Rotherham United and Salford’s EFL Trophy triumph in March.

He will be hoping to add to his medal collection in the coming months as well.
